Angel Heart is one of the most Stylish Horror Films ever made
Angel Heart is such a wonderful mixture of two VERY interesting stories. I won't speak of one of them in order to avoid creating a "spoiler" for folks who haven't seen this film yet. On that note, you MUST get a hold of this and see it as soon as possible! You're really missing out on a fun ride of a film, and that's all there is to it.
One of the craziest things about this movie right off the bat is Mickey Rourke in general. In this and films like the classic Diner (1982), Mickey has to be about as attractive a movie star as they come. What's so crazy is what has happened to him currently. It's not that he's un-attractive really, it's more that he looks some an entirely different person! My Dad watched The Wrestler (2008) recently and I had to inform him that he'd actually been looking at Mickey Rourke for over 30 minutes or so. Yes folks, he looks THAT different, and it's kinda freaky.
At it's heart, Angel Heart is a detective story...almost a film noir in style just about. It's also a period piece, and a period not that far behind us which always creates very unique challenges to the filmmakers. In this case, they wailed.
The film's pace is spot on perfect, in my humble opinion. I don't think anyone would have a hard time finding lots of entertainment upon watching this movie for the first time. I remember vividly seeing this film in the bowels of an Enterprise class Aircraft Carrier when I was still in the Navy. This was certainly an unforgettable way to have seen this great movie.
