"What can Film Schools do for me?"

The process of researching and evaluating film schools can be both wonderfully exciting as well as incredibly daunting. I took a look at this myself and here's what I discovered.

Certainly any college will be able to teach you how to write, shoot, direct and edit your own films. One thing that really separates one school from another is what happens AFTER the course.

Some film schools, such as "The New York Film Academy," have absolutely world class and proven job placement for its students. Being able to find a great job after schooling has to be one of the top priorities, so finding a school that's great at this helps.

Another fantastic benefit of attending one of the movie colleges is the contacts you'll make while you're there. Many lifelong filmmaking relationships have started this way, and we have the wonderful movies they've produced as a result.

The great news about these education centers is that there are quite a few of them in the U.S. as well as nearby Canada. With so many to choose from, here are some factors you should consider carefully before making your choice.

Region
You can just about attend school anywhere, so why not place yourself in a location you're very happy with.

Specific Faculty Members
Many available schools boast outstanding professors who you'll have access to with their programs. This can also be filed under contacts gained, but either way this can be a huge advantage to your ultimate career.

Program Specialties/Strengths
Different schools will focus on specific facets of filmmaking. Depending on where you're ultimately headed, this could be a huge part of your decision.

Overall Cost
Let's face it, education in general costs a great deal of money, so there are probably no bargain basement specials out there. But it still makes good sense to consider all your costs. Your specific region can alter your housing expeses greatly, so this is again very important to consider. As always, you're invited to chime in with your own experiences and comments about these wonderful schools. Let us know what you think, and we'll thank you for it!
