The Coolest Horror Movie List Ever

As a fan of horror films I am obligated to create the coolest horror movie list ever. It's just that simple - I have no choice in the matter. When I think about horror films I tend to put them into five major camps, or sub-genres.

  1. Science Fiction Horror
  2. Demonic Horror
  3. Super Natural Disaster Horror
  4. Slasher Film / Gore Horror
  5. Animal / Beast gone crazy Horror

Most of the scary movies I love reside clearly in the Science Fiction category, but truly I love all of these sub-genres the same. These films are presented in no particular order. I love them all, and I hope you do too! I've decided not to put these films in any particular order, or to even rank any of them. You can find that anywhere you look on the web, and it's my belief that no two of us would agree on the order, so why even go there? These film are awesome - every darned one of them, so I'm going to attempt to identify and pontificate a bit on each one. Please consider making use of our Content Submission form to add you voice to this discussion - even if it's just a short comment. Fun Film Talk is the most friendly movie website you'll ever visit, and YOU are the guest, so please take a load off and enjoy yourself while you're here.

Alien
"In space no one can hear you scream."

Alien has to be one of the all time scariest horror movies ever created. Planted solidly in the science fiction horror sub-genre, this is a movie that can rock you to your core in terms of fear. I attribute much of this movie's power to our primal fear of sharks. It's as if sharks have been transformed into more intelligent beings who can walk around on land, survive in ANY environment, including deep space, and they're 100 times scarier than any shark - with even more teeth!

One of the greatest things about Alien is its marketing slogan, "In space no one can hear you scream." Also, this movie poster's idea was used in one of the most briliant commercials (print and tv) for ANY film. You would see this creepy egg in space with that slogan, and your imagination would do the rest...pure genius on the part of the folks responsible for advertising the original Alien.

Jacob's Ladder
"This is a Horror-Psychological-Thriller that ROCKS!"

The most wonderful thing about Jacob's Ladder, and any movie like it - can't really be discussed in detail here as it could create a spoiler situation for folks who haven't seen the movie yet. What I can say is that Tim Robbins is amazingly perfect in this role - a vietnam vet trying to re-enter his life after returning from the war.

Angel Heart
"A Stylish Horror Film doesn't even describe it!"

I'll never forget where I saw Angel Heart for the first time. I was aboard an enterprise class aircraft carrier. Being a musician attached to the Sixth Fleet Band in Naples, Italy, we had lots of downtime waiting to arrive at destinations we were scheduled to perform, so at this time I happened to be in one of the many lounges available to sailors during their time off (or liberty time, as it's called in the Navy). The ship regularly ran closed curcuit movies to all televisions, and this evening they were running Angel Heart.

As I've said above, the word stylish doesn't even go far enough. This has to be one of the most stylized horror movies ever produced. The detail is amazing, and every facet of this movie from acting to story to cinematography is nothing short of the coveted "master's stroke."

Friday the 13th
"80's Teenage Slasher Gore as Classic as it gets."

I have to be honest, when I was a teenager, I couldn't WAIT to see films like this. It was almost a hynotic trance I was trapped in - some sort of pop culture inescapable influence. I mention this because now I wouldn't walk across the street to see a film like this. It's just not my horror cup of tea any longer. I wish no offense to folks who still love this movie in particular and the slasher genre in general - rock on with your horror film enthusiam. I'm just saying I somehow lost my taste for these movies as I got older. I have to admit though - I would LOVE to visit the actual location for Camp Crystal Lake sometime. I do have a bizarre romantic yearning to do that.
