You may or may not be aware of this, but a movie's soundtrack is probably one of the most important elements of any film. Sure, we've all revelled at the exciting and masterful work of John Williams in epics like Star Wars, or Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the more subtle and hidden film scores are just as amazing if you'll take a moment to check them out.

As a musician I realized that I was being quite remiss at not addressing such a wonderful and necessary element to the movies we all love. In a nutshell, welcome to the cool corner of Fun Film Talk where we'll dig deep into this beautiful and lyrical world of movie music and everything that means to us as movie fans.

The history of scoring films leads us to early silent films where the music was actually performed locally at every exhibition of a film, either by a pianist or even an organist. The earliest music actually made as part of the film would be orchestral in nature for the most part. This wonderful tradition has actually continued to modern film, but we now also enjoy electronically composed movie music that can actually rival orchestral work, much in the same way digital video has risen to challenge optical 35mm film itself.
