"Is the Science Fiction Genre just another Fantasy Sub-Genre?"

The Science Fiction Genre is often considered a sub-genre of the fantasy or science genre. In my humble opinion I consider this to be a bonafide film genre all its own.
As much as I love this genre, I have to admit that thematically, this genre can be described as a bit on the pessimistic side. Many of the plot ideas for science fiction films deal with "fear-of-armageddon" type themes, where modern and futuristic technology turns out to be our worst enemy.
Film Genres
As I said, this is certainly one of my all time favorite film genres, and depressing or not, I've always found these types of movies to be simply fascinating. When I think back to some of my favorites, like The Matrix (1999), Minority Report (2002), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)(1978), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and War of the Worlds (1953)(2005) I'm reminded of how exciting and interesting this genre can be.
