One of the things I find most fascinating about The Exorcist is the phenomena that occured when it was first released. It's also kind of funny that The Blair Witch Project experienced a very similar phenomenon. (Although it must be stated that the two movies are nowhere near each other in quality. The Exorcist is a fantastically made film, and The Blair Witch Project, although a suspense genius work, is basically a piece of junk technically speaking.)
Both films experienced a HUGE wave of popularity AFTER they were out for a bit. Sheer word of mouth sent thousands and thousands of viewers to their screens, and both films profited quite nicely as a result, both in terms of money as well as overall historical placement.
It has also been reported that there were an unusually high amount of deaths during the making of The Exorcist. This certainly made it's producers more than a little uncomfortable in light of the film's subject matter.
